The 1835 D&C sec 5 has three significant additions to Book of Commandments sec 4 1829, they are D&C 5:6 “For hereafter you shall be ordained and go forth and deliver my words unto the children of men”. D&C 5:11 “And in addition to your testimony, the testimony of the three of my servants, whom I shall call and ordain,” D&C 5:17 “And you must wait yet a little while, for ye are not yet ordained.”
There is nothing in the modern versions of the D&C to highlight the addition of the Lord ‘ordaining’. It is significant that David Whitmer knew nothing of John the Baptist appearing to Joseph and Oliver and ordaining the priesthood upon them. If the ordaining verses did not exist in 1829, why have they been added? If ordaining was important, why didn’t the Lord make this plain to Joseph and the three witnesses, shouldn’t they have known about this in 1829 when it was necessary rather than retrospectively in 1835 long after the event.
It would appear that early members did go forth without being ordained, for no one remembers it as a necessity, certainly not David Whitmer, did the three witnesses need to be ordained to be witnesses, I don’t recall David Whitmer or Martin Harris being ordained before becoming witnesses, included in the Book of Mormon publication of March 1830.
This is the third example of topical additions in this section, see reformation or restoration and I will give him no other gift. This topical addition appears like the other two, to be evidence of evolving doctrine rather than revelation restoring the original Church of Christ.
