Typically LDS members are informed that the Masons have an apostate form of the endowment that originated from workers on Solomon’s temple. There isn’t any secular evidence to support this idea. Documents including Masonic type information existed in medieval times and possibly informed it’s development in England during the 18th century, which spawned the Masonic movement Joseph and his brother Hyrum would have encountered in North Eastern America in the early 19th century.

Observations

1.The temple endowment in Solomon’s time would have required the Melchizedek priesthood, who were the holders of this priesthood? and in what numbers did they exist to perform endowment rites?

2.Any non-member working on the construction of a modern LDS temple would not be able to witness the endowment ritual by constructing the rooms in which it would take place, neither I suspect would Melchizedek priesthood holders be putting on a show for the builders of Solomon’s temple.

Conclusion

On the simple grounds above, it would seem to me extremely unlikely that Masons working on Solomon’s temple would witness and be able to record so minutely the details of the endowment.

Endowment over time

I once met with a Mason who as a new member of the LDS church visited the London temple to be endowed and sealed. On his return to Scotland he explained that as a result of his experience he would be leaving the church, stating that he already knew the signs and tokens. He concluded that Joseph Smith copied the Mason’s. Anyone familiar with the party game Chinese whispers would know that when played over a period nearing three thousand years, the endowment would in all probability be unrecognisable. Yet all Joseph needed to do was tweak it!
