In the 1830 Book of Mormon first edition, Mosiah 21:28 states “And now Limhi was again filled with joy on learning from the mouth of Ammon that king Benjamin had a gift from God, whereby he could interpret such engravings; yea, and Ammon also did rejoice“. The 1837 second edition replaces Benjamin’s name with Mosiah.
FAIR acknowledges the change and is not alone in discussing the issue, (see Book of Mormon Central) It is good that church scholars can make arguments that both can be correct. The goal of apologetics is to make everyone ‘feel ok’, your faith is safe. One argument is Mormon made a mistake, another is that the gold plates scribe at the time thought Benjamin was still around. There are probably many other, as yet unheard of permutations. The Book of Mormon Title page states “And now, if there are faults they are the mistakes of men; wherefore, condemn not the things of God”. What I’m thinking on a more simplistic level is why did the heavenly assignee placing the words on Joseph’s seer stone in the bottom of his white top hat originally spell Benjamin, not Mosiah?
