BoC 4:2 March 1829, “I have given these things unto my servant Joseph….and he has a gift to translate the book and I have commanded him that he shall pretend to no other gift, for I will grant him no other gift.”
Compare with D&C 5:4 “And you have a gift to translate the plates; and this is the first gift that I bestowed upon you; and I have commanded that you should pretend to no other gift until my purpose is fulfilled in this; for I will grant unto you no other gift until it is finished”.
I never had an opportunity to ask in a church class why does The Lord say in 1829 Joseph will have no other gift, other than to translate the Book of Mormon. Then a few years later The Lord apparently says, “Oh, what I really meant by that is, no other gift at the time, until the translating is finished.” If God is the author of Joseph’s revelations and he knew the Nephites should keep a second record to circumvent Martin Harris losing 116 manuscript pages, surely he should know that he will grant additional gifts to Joseph once the Book of Mormon is published? Why couldn’t he have said that in 1829. Because it appears that Joseph is writing down a revelation, only to realise that it curbed his powers. So was it a revelation or just Joseph making it up and having to change it later to justify his being able to translate the Bible (Inspired version), Abrahamic papyri, see heavenly messengers, make prophetic statements, claim to heal, etc.
The fact that the D&C currently never indicates in italics or footnotes that this section has been modified to change diametrically a previous statement, smacks of dishonesty because it lacks transparency over its historical, literary development. The LDS church appears to be covering it’s tracks, so when a lifelong member discovers how they have been deliberately mislead, the dissonance is excessive and makes such actions unforgiveable.
